Usually this question is easy to answer. Normally, I would agree that athletes should not be punished for political issues and should compete. After all, they have worked hard and sacrificed a lot to get where they are. But is this year different? Are our athletes possibly risking their lives to compete in the China games?
Who remembers the 1972 games in Germany? The German Massacre. So far we have stories of our athletes being required to download a certain app on their personal cell phones. And China has announced that ANY verbal criticism of China by athletes will lead to their arrest. So where do we draw the line between competing or not competing? Can we trust China with our athlete's lives? If you were an athlete, would you still want to go or would you consider the risk too great?
